Countryside Stewardship, Farm Wildlife Packages and Key Dates

The mid-tier Countryside Stewardship scheme offers capital items and management options to achieve simple but effective environmental benefits. Mid-tier grants can be accessed through 3 options:

1. Management Options & Capital Grants

These are very similar to previous years and allow farmers to choose from all available multi-year options and capital items to form an agreement which delivers local environmental benefits.

Capital grants are available for 2 main purposes: Management and maintain hedgerows and management water pollution and improve water quality.

Applications are competitive and will be given a score according to the delivery of local priorities.

2. Water Capital Grants Only

This option is for farmers in a high water priority area and includes applications for capital items intended to improve water quality only. These capital-only agreements last for 2 years and have a max value of £10,000. Examples of capital items include roofing for dirty water yards, concrete yard renewal and many more are available to landowners who fall within the ‘water quality high priority areas’.

3. Farm Wildlife Package (WPFWP)

This option includes packages for arable, pastoral and mixed farms and require that a minimum of 3% of farmland is taken out of production.

This a non-competitive scheme and is the quickest way to apply for mid tier. The four wildlife officers are designed to fit with specific farm types: Arable, Upland, Lowland Grazing and Mixed Farms. These packages follow a more simplified application process and offer a limited range of options. Successful applicants will receive an annual payment each year for five years.

Please note that all application packs must be requested by 31st May, and applications close on the 31st of July
